The story of Elisabet
The proliferation of short forms follows from three things. The name is four syllables, which gives a lot of material to cut from. It has been among the most used women's names in Europe for six hundred years, so an enormous number of people needed distinguishing. And it has been in use across a dozen languages, each of which clipped it by its own rules: English from the front and the back, French to Elise and Lise, German to Ilse and Liesl, Italian to Bettina, Spanish to Isabel and Chabela, Hungarian to Erzsi. Once a short form is established it can generate its own descendants, so Elizabeth gives Bess, Bess gives Bessie and Betsy, and Betsy is now three steps from the original. Isabel diverged so far that it became a separate name with its own diminutives, and most speakers no longer connect the two.
Meaning
Hebrew Elisheba, my God is an oath
From Hebrew el, God, and sheva, an oath or the number seven, usually read as my God is an oath or God is abundance. Elisheba is the wife of Aaron in Exodus and Elisabeth the mother of John the Baptist in Luke. Elisabet is the Scandinavian, Spanish and Catalan spelling, dropping the final h that English adds. It peaks in the American data in 1980.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Alfreida test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Elisabet's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Alfreida climbed just as high around 1947, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Alfreida's path sketches the road Elisabet is walking now.
Elisabet sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
