The story of Elizabet
English speakers rarely notice how unusual their th is. It is two sounds, one in thin and one in this, and the great majority of the world's languages have neither; learners of English struggle with it for years and often never get it. Greek had it, which is how the Hebrew name reached Europe with the sound intact, and then most of Europe lost it again. Every language did something different: Scandinavian dropped it and wrote t, Russian replaced it with a v earlier in the word, Hungarian rebuilt the whole thing, and Spanish cut the front off and produced Isabel. Elisabet is the northern European answer, and it is spelled here almost exactly as Sweden spells it.

Hebrew Elisheva: el, God, with sheva, which means both an oath and the number seven, the two being linked because oaths were sworn by sevens. My God is abundance is also offered. Elisabet without the h is the standard spelling in Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish, so this is a real form rather than a truncation.
