Where it comes from

The story of Kesha

The three names at the end of Job are all sensory: Jemimah is a dove, Keziah is cassia, and Keren-happuch is a horn of eye-paint. And the inheritance line is not decoration. Daughters did not ordinarily inherit alongside sons in that world, and the book states plainly that these did, which readers have argued about for two thousand years. Keziah went into English use with the Puritans, who took names from every corner of the Hebrew scriptures, and it was carried into American records and shortened. Kesha and Keisha belong to that line or to a twentieth-century coinage; the record does not distinguish, and both are real.

cassia, the spice bark

Keziah, the likeliest source, is Hebrew for cassia — the aromatic bark related to cinnamon, used in incense and perfume. Kesha may also be a clip of Keisha or Lakeisha, whose own origins are not established. The connection is plausible and undocumented for this spelling.

Kesha sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1976, with 313 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kesha went to 7 girls in 2025, but Keesha is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 12, which makes it the 948th most-given girls’ name of the year — 10,984 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 133,939 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 229,610 for Kesha itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables that everyone can say and nearly spell after one hearing.
  • One of its possible sources is a documented biblical name with an unusual story.
  • It serves either child, and the records show both.
What to consider
  • Keisha, Kiesha and Keshia are all in use and all close.
  • The first vowel is said two ways and the spelling settles neither.
  • The very few boys given this spelling will be read as girls on paper.
