The story of Xoe
Zoe was used by Greek-speaking Christians in the eastern Mediterranean from late antiquity, sometimes as a Greek translation of Hebrew Eve, whose name is connected to life by the same logic. Two Byzantine empresses carried it, including the Zoe who ruled in her own right in the eleventh century. English adopted it in the nineteenth century, and American use climbed steeply from the 1990s into the top hundred. Xoe belongs to the respelling wave that followed: it appears in the 2000s alongside Zoey, Zoie and Zooey, and peaks in 2009. The X- substitution runs through the same period in Xander, Xavion and Xzavier.
