Where it comes from

The story of Xavior

Francis Xavier co-founded the Society of Jesus with Ignatius of Loyola and became the most traveled missionary of the sixteenth century, working in Goa, Malacca and Japan and dying off the coast of China in 1552. He was canonized in 1622 and became one of the most venerated saints in the Catholic world, which put his place name into circulation as a given name across Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and their colonies. American use rose sharply after 1990 and Xavier entered the top hundred. The respellings followed: Xavior, Zavier, Xzavier and Javier all divide the same sound, and the -ior ending aligns the name visually with warrior, savior and superior.

Meaning

the new house

Basque etxe means house and berri means new; Etxeberria, the new house, is one of the most common Basque surnames and place names. The castle of Xavier in Navarre carries a Spanish rendering of it, and Francisco de Jasso y Azpilicueta took his name from the castle where he was born in 1506. So the name means a building, and only became a personal name because one man from that building became famous. The derivation is settled and unusually easy to trace.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is concrete, documented and easy to explain in three words.
  • Xav and Javi are both usable short forms with different characters.
  • The X initial is distinctive and immediately memorable.
What to consider
  • Four spellings share the sound and hers will be written as one of the others.
  • The initial x is said as a z by most and as eggs- by some.
  • The -ior ending reads as a respelling to people who know the saint's name.
