Richy
Masculine · “brave ruler”
English has two endings for a friendly name — the -ie of Charlie and the -y of Tommy — and they are entirely interchangeable, which is why the same nickname can be spelled two ways and nobody notices. Richy takes the plainer of the two. Behind it is Richard, a Norman import that England kept so thoroughly that three kings and a great many surnames came out of it.

The story of Richy
Richard came to England with the Normans and stayed, producing not only three kings but an unusually rich crop of pet forms — Rick, Dick, Hick and Hodge in the Middle Ages, each of them spawning surnames that survive. Scotland made Ritchie, which is a surname there as well as a familiar form, and America absorbed all of it. Richy is the least ornamented spelling of the short form: no t, no e, nothing borrowed from the Scottish surname. It is what the name looks like when it is written by ear rather than by tradition.
Meaning
brave ruler
From the Germanic ric, ruler or power, and hard, brave or hardy. The first element is the same one behind the German Reich and the Latin rex, and it appears in dozens of names; the second is the one that closes Bernard and Gerard.

The Amelio test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Richy's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Amelio climbed just as high around 1914, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Amelio's path sketches the road Richy is walking now.
Richy sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is warm without being childish, which short forms in -y often fail at.
- Rich and Richard are both available, so a man is never stuck with a diminutive.
- Nothing about the spelling causes anyone to hesitate over the sound.
- Richie is the commoner spelling and will be written instead almost always.
- As a given name it reads as a nickname, and a man will be asked what it is short for.
- It carries a mid-century American flavor, which some ears hear as friendly and some as dated.
