Where it comes from

The story of Xaiver

Basque place names are unusually transparent because the language is unrelated to anything around it and its compounds stay visible. Etxe is house, berri is new, and etxeberri turns up all over the Basque country, anglicized variously as Echeverria, Echevarria, Chavarria and, through Navarrese Xabier, as Xavier. The same elements build much of the map: iturri, a spring, gives Iturbide; larre, a meadow, gives Larrea; mendi, a mountain, gives Mendoza and Mendez in part. When Francisco de Jasso took his birthplace as his name, he was following the ordinary Iberian noble practice of naming yourself for your holding, and the accident of his later fame turned a Basque farmhouse description into a first name given to millions of children who have never seen Navarre.

Meaning

Basque etxeberri, the new house

Xaiver is a transposition of Xavier, from the castle of Xabier in Navarre, whose name is Basque etxeberri, new house. Francis Xavier, born there in 1506, took it as a territorial surname. The transposed spelling, with the i and e reversed, is common enough in American records to hold a rank of its own. The peak of this spelling is 2007.
