Where it comes from

The story of Willian

William was the conqueror's name, and after 1066 it took over English naming so completely that a large share of medieval men carried it. Every European language has a version. Brazil took the English spelling in the twentieth century, when English-language names became fashionable there, and Portuguese orthography reshaped it: Willian, Wilian and Uilian all appear, and Willian is the commonest. The name also turns up in American records much earlier, where it is usually a clerk's or a family's variant of William rather than a separate name.

Meaning

resolute protection; will and helmet

Germanic Willahelm: wil, will or desire, joined to helm, a helmet and by extension protection. The Normans carried it to England, where it became the most-given male name for centuries.

Willian sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1931, with 77 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

About 1 boy in 63,262 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 85,404 for Willian itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
