Weylin
Masculine · “Germanic Wela”
There is a neolithic long barrow in Oxfordshire called Wayland's Smithy. It was built around 3500 BC. The Saxons who named it two hundred generations later found it already ancient, decided a legendary smith must live inside, and attached the name of one they knew from Germanic story. The name on the monument is four thousand years younger than the monument.

The story of Weylin
Wayland appears across the whole Germanic world. The Norse Volundarkvida tells his story in full: a smith captured by a king, hamstrung to prevent his escape, who takes revenge and then flies away on wings he has made. He is carved on the eighth-century Franks Casket in the British Museum, named in Beowulf as the maker of a mail shirt, and referred to in Old English poetry as a byword for craftsmanship. The Oxfordshire barrow acquired his name by the tenth century, when a charter boundary calls it Welandes smiddan, and local tradition held that a traveler who left a horse and a coin overnight would find the horse shod by morning. What the Saxons were doing is what people always do with monuments they cannot explain: attaching the largest story they have to the largest thing they can see.

Germanic Wela, from a root for craft or battle
Weylin is a variant of Wayland or Weyland, the name of the legendary smith of Germanic myth, called Volundr in Old Norse and Wayland in Old English. The first element has been connected to a root meaning craft or skill and to one meaning battle; neither is settled. The name is not a common historical given name and its modern use is a revival. It peaks in the American data in 1977.

Two syllables, stress on the first. Wayland has a fuller final syllable, WAY-lund; the -lin spelling reduces it further. The Norse Volundr is VUR-lund-r, with three syllables and a final r that is part of the case ending.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Myers test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Weylin's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Myers climbed just as high around 1919, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Myers's path sketches the road Weylin is walking now.
Weylin sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
