The story of Wess
John Wesley and his brother Charles led a movement inside the Church of England from the 1730s, preaching in fields when pulpits were closed to them and organizing converts into societies with strict rules of life. The nickname Methodist was originally a jeer at their methodical habits at Oxford. John insisted throughout his life that he was not leaving the church, and the separation happened after his death. What followed in America was enormous: Methodism became the largest Protestant denomination in the United States by the mid-nineteenth century, spread by circuit riders across the frontier, and its founders' surnames entered the American name stock. Wesley is the most successful of them, and Asbury, after Francis Asbury, the first American bishop, appears in the same records for the same reason.
