Tyrone is Irish, from Tir Eoghain, the land of Eoghan. Tyler is English, from a man who laid tiles. The two share nothing except a first syllable, and that syllable is what the American naming system took from them. A prefix pool does not care where its material came from.

Where it comes from

Our story of Tyvon

Our reading is that the prefix inventory of American coinage is assembled by sound alone and that this is worth stating plainly, because it is where most invented etymologies come from. A reference work faced with Tyvon will look for Ty and find Tyrone, then report that the name has an Irish origin meaning land of Eoghan. That is false in the way that matters: no part of the Irish name is present except two letters, and the parents who chose the syllable were not choosing a county in Ulster. The system harvests first syllables from whatever names are large at the time, and a syllable so harvested is empty. Ty came into circulation because Tyrone was a substantial American name in the 1950s and Tyler an enormous one in the 1980s, and those two names have nothing in common but a sound.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Tyvon is an American formation joining the Ty- prefix to the -von ending. The prefix is drawn from Tyrone and Tyler, unrelated names of Irish and English origin respectively; the ending comes from the second half of Devon, an English county name of Celtic origin. Neither fragment carries its source's meaning, and the compound is not attested in any language. It peaks in 1995.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Ty is a strong, current short form that stands alone.
  • The name is short and rarely misheard.
  • The sound is smooth and easy to say.
What to consider
  • Two stress patterns are in use.
  • There is no meaning behind either element.
  • Reference works will attach an Irish etymology that does not apply.
