Where it comes from

The story of Triniti

Tertullian, writing in Carthage, needed vocabulary for a doctrine that had none — and he built it, coining trinitas, substantia and persona in their theological senses. A great deal of the technical language of Western Christianity was invented by one man arguing in Latin. The word came into English use as a girl's name in the twentieth century and Triniti is a modern respelling.

Meaning

threeness

From Latin trinitas, a noun Tertullian appears to have coined from trinus, threefold, to name the doctrine. It is an abstract noun meaning the quality of being three, and it entered English through French.

Triniti sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2004, with 220 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Triniti went to 30 girls in 2025, but Trinity is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 755, which makes it the 393rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,153 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 2,129 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 53,576 for Triniti itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
