Columbus named the island for the Trinity in 1498, and the usual explanation is that he saw three hills on the horizon. He had also vowed to name the next land he found after it. Either way, an island in the Caribbean carries a word that does not appear anywhere in the Bible.

From trinitas to Trinidad
The story of Trinidad
The word trinitas was coined by Tertullian around the year 200 to name something the scriptures do not name: the doctrine took three centuries of argument, several councils and one of the bitterest disputes in Christian history before it settled, and the word was invented partway through as a shorthand. Spanish naming then treated the finished doctrine the way it treated feasts and Marian titles, and handed it to children. The names in that class behave unusually on paper: they are abstract nouns rather than personal names, and they go to sons and daughters alike, which is why this one shows a near-even split in the American record and why the split is not an accident.
Meaning
trinity
Spanish Trinidad, from Latin trinitas, threeness. It is one of the Spanish devotional names taken directly from a doctrine or a feast and given to children of either sex, alongside Concepcion, Encarnacion, Asuncion and Rosario.

The Rowland test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Trinidad's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rowland climbed just as high around 1903, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rowland's path sketches the road Trinidad is walking now.
Trinidad sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled Latin meaning attached to a specific and datable coinage.
- It genuinely serves either child, and the record shows a near-even split.
- Two short forms in real Spanish use, one of which serves either child.
- It is the name of a country, and that is what most English speakers will think of.
- English and Spanish speakers stress it differently, so two sayings are in use.
- The even split means forms will guess and will be wrong about half the time.
