Where it comes from

The story of Tresean

Trey entered English in the fourteenth century as the name of the three in dice and cards, from Old French treis, three, and it stayed in gaming vocabulary for six hundred years without becoming a name. The American use for a third-generation namesake is twentieth century and is now standard: a boy named after his father and grandfather is called Trey rather than Junior, which belongs to the second generation. From there it became an independent given name and then an element available for compounding, which is where Tresean, Treshaun and Trevon come from. English has no other nickname taken from gambling, and it has no ordinary word for a third-born child at all, unlike Latin, which had Tertius, or Japanese, which had Saburo. The card term filled a gap the language had left open.

Hebrew Yochanan, Yah is gracious

Tresean joins a Tre- opening to Sean, the Irish form of John. The opening is most likely from Trey, a card and dice term for three, from Old French treis, used in America for the third of a name. The compound is American and the numeric sense does not carry into it. The peak is 1999.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Tre and Sean are both complete names as short forms.
  • The stressed ending gives it a firm final beat.
  • Both halves are familiar to American readers.
What to consider
  • The -sean spelling is not read as shawn by English rules.
  • Treshaun and Treshawn compete for the same sound.
  • The 1999 peak dates it to a narrow window.
