The story of Toribio
Toribio de Mogrovejo was appointed archbishop of Lima in 1579, a layman and a lawyer sent to a see he had not sought, and he spent twenty-five years traveling a diocese the size of Western Europe. He learned Quechua, held councils that produced catechisms in indigenous languages, and confirmed, by tradition, both Rose of Lima and Martin de Porres. He was canonized in 1726, and his name became common in Peru and then across Spanish America. The pattern is worth noticing: a European saint's name carried to the Americas, attached there to an American figure, and then returned to general use with a new center of gravity. The name is far commoner in Mexico and Peru than in Spain, and its American curve peaks in 1929 with Mexican migration rather than with anything Iberian.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Toribio comes from Latin Turibius, itself apparently from Greek. The proposed derivations, including one from thorubos, an uproar or crowd, are not established, and standard reference works decline to settle it. What is documented is the transmission: Turibius was borne by Spanish bishops in the fifth and sixth centuries and then by Toribio de Mogrovejo, archbishop of Lima. The American peak is 1929.

The Langdon test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Toribio's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Langdon climbed just as high around 1911, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Langdon's path sketches the road Toribio is walking now.
