Where it comes from

The story of Timmothy

First and Second Timothy and Titus are called the Pastoral Epistles because they concern the ordering of congregations rather than doctrine in the abstract, and they have been treated as a group since the eighteenth century. The doubts are cumulative rather than decisive: a vocabulary containing many words Paul never uses elsewhere and much that belongs to second-century Greek moral writing; a church structure with settled offices that seems later than the loose arrangements of the undisputed letters; instructions about widows and elders that presuppose an institution; and difficulties fitting the travel details into the chronology of Acts. Defenders point to the use of a secretary, to a possible late release from prison, and to changing circumstances. The debate has run since Schleiermacher in 1807 and has not closed.

Meaning

Greek time and theos, honoring God

Timmothy is a respelling of Timothy, from Greek Timotheos, joining time, honor, to theos, God, giving one who honors God. The doubled m is an American addition. Timothy appears in Acts and in several letters as a companion of Paul, and two epistles are addressed to him. The peak of this spelling is 1966.

About 1 boy in 981 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 244,011 for Timmothy itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
