Tierney
Feminine · “Irish "descendant of the lord”
Tierney is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 3,956 girls against 23 boys since 1880.
Tierney means lord, which is an odd thing to find in the girls' column and a good illustration of what happens when a surname becomes a first name. Ó Tighearnaigh is a patronymic — descendant of Tighearnach — and the root word tighearna means a lord or a chief. Nothing in the name was ever female or ever a given name at all.

The story of Tierney
Irish surnames became American given names in two waves: the first in the nineteenth century among Irish-American families using them as middle names, and the second, much larger, from the 1980s when Irish surnames became fashionable generally — Riley, Casey, Delaney, Kennedy, Tierney. The second wave sent almost all of them to girls, for reasons that have more to do with the sound of a final -y or -ey than with anything Irish. Tierney's 1993 peak sits in the middle of that wave, and the actress Gene Tierney, visible from the 1940s, had already established the surname in an American ear.
Meaning
Irish "descendant of the lord"
From Irish tighearna, "lord, chief, master", which itself derives from tigh, a house — a lord is the head of a house. Tighearnach was a personal name built from it, and Ó Tighearnaigh is the surname of his descendants. The etymology is well documented; several Irish saints and a major medieval annalist carried the personal name.

The Rickie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tierney's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rickie climbed just as high around 1947, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rickie's path sketches the road Tierney is walking now.
Tierney sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
