The story of Teigan
Tadhg was so common in Ireland that Taig became an English term for an Irishman, later a slur — a history worth knowing about the root. The diminutive Tadhgán anglicized as Teagan and, from the 1990s, became a popular given name in English-speaking countries for both sexes. Respellings followed: Teigan, Tegan, Taegan, Teagen. The ei spelling peaked in 2017 and is the least predictable of them, since English ei can be read three ways.

Irish "little poet", from Tadhg
Tadhg means a poet or a philosopher and is well attested from early Irish. Tadhgán is its diminutive, anglicized as Teague, Tegan and Teagan. A separate Welsh name Tegan, from teg meaning fair or pretty, is a different word and also feeds the modern spelling. The two sources cannot be distinguished in American records.

TEE-gun
Two syllables with the stress on the first and the second vowel fully reduced. The ei is intended as a long E, but English ei also says AY and long I, so first-time readers may try TAY-gun. The Irish Tadhg is said TYGE, rhyming with Nige.

The Hersh test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Teigan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Hersh climbed just as high around 2002, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Hersh's path sketches the road Teigan is walking now.
