Our story of Tayten
Respelling severs meaning, and this is one of the few places where you can watch it happen letter by letter. Payton and Clayton end in a real word: tun, which gave town and stands at the end of thousands of English place names, from Brighton to Washington. The second syllable is unstressed, so its vowel is a schwa and any letter can represent it. A parent writing -ten is doing nothing audible, but the etymology no longer holds, because -ten is not a word and never was. Multiply that across a rhyme family and the family drifts free of its sources entirely: -tyn, -tin, -ten and -tonn all appear, and after two generations nothing in the spelling points back to a farmstead. This is the ordinary cost of phonetic respelling. It buys distinctiveness on paper and pays for it with the history the letters used to carry.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Tayten has no inherited etymology. It belongs to the Payton and Clayton rhyme family, built from a Tay- opening and a -ten ending. The -ton spelling those names use is genuine, from Old English tun, an enclosure or farmstead; -ten is not an English element and appears only in respellings. The peak is 2006.

Tayten's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Joaquim climbed just as high around 1940, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Joaquim's path sketches the road Tayten is walking now.
