Our story of Tayla
Ours, offered as ours. In medieval tailoring the cloth cost far more than the labor, so the cutting was the expensive and skilled part and a bad cut ruined the material. That is why the trade is named for cutting in French, English and Spanish alike. Tayla is a modern women's form of the surname, and the same French root gives English retail, which means selling in cut pieces.
Meaningscholars disagree
tailor, cutter of cloth
Taylor is documented: from Old French tailleur, a cutter, on taillier, to cut. Separately Yiddish Teyle and Hebrew Tal, dew, have been offered for Tayla. Neither is established, and the Taylor route is the likelier.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Jovita test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tayla's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jovita climbed just as high around 1930, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jovita's path sketches the road Tayla is walking now.
