Tari
Feminine · “a place of prospect”
Tari is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 2,274 girls against 46 boys since 1880.
Tari can shorten two unrelated names, and the older of the two is a hill. Tara in Ireland is the seat where the high kings were made — a low green rise in County Meath with earthworks on it that are four thousand years older than any king. Terri is the other road, and it leads somewhere entirely different.

The story of Tari
Tara was the ceremonial center of early Ireland and remained a symbol long after it stopped being a place where anything happened; nineteenth-century Irish nationalism made it famous again, and a novel about the American South borrowed it for a plantation, which is how most Americans met the word. Terri arrived from a different direction entirely, as the women's version of Terry, itself a medieval English form of Theodoric. Both produced Tari, and the bare i ending marks it as belonging to the same American convention that gave Jodi, Sandi and Robbi.

a place of prospect
The Irish Teamhair, anglicized Tara, is usually read as a place with a wide view, or a place set apart — the derivations offered are old and none is settled. If this name comes instead from Terri, the trail runs to Theresa, whose origin has never been established either, or to Theodoric, which is Germanic and means ruler of the people. Two roads, both ending in a question, which is an unusual amount of uncertainty for such a short name.
Pronouncing Tari
TAR-ee
TAR-ee, two syllables, stress at the front, the first vowel open as in car. Some say TAIR-ee, following Terri rather than Tara, and both are in use — which of the two parent names a family had in mind usually decides it.

The Launa test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tari's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Launa climbed just as high around 1908, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Launa's path sketches the road Tari is walking now.
Tari sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Four letters and two syllables, said easily in any accent.
- Two longer names are available behind it if a formal version is ever wanted.
- It works for either child, though it goes almost entirely to girls in practice.
- The first vowel can be read two ways, and the reading depends on which parent name the listener assumes.
- Terri, Teri and Tara are all far more common and all will be substituted.
- The bare i ending reads as a nickname on a document, and no long form comes with it.
