Launa
Feminine
There was a wave of invented names ninety years before the modern one. American records of the 1900s are full of short vowel-rich coinages with no source in any language: Launa, Lona, Vada, Ova, Ola, Ila, Ova, Ona. Nobody calls them respellings because nothing was respelled. They were simply made.

Our story of Launa
Our reading is that American name invention is at least a century older than the tradition usually credited with it, and the evidence is in the 1900s data. Names like Ova, Ola, Ila, Vada, Ada-adjacent forms, Lona, Launa and Orie appear in numbers, cluster in the South and in Appalachia, and cannot be derived from anything. They are short, they are heavy on vowels, they use a small set of consonants, and they behave exactly as modern coinages do: they come in families, they vary in spelling, and reference works either ignore them or assign them invented meanings. The only reason they are not described as coinages is that nobody was writing about naming at the time, so the wave went unrecorded and the names simply aged into looking traditional. Anything that survives a century stops looking invented, which is worth remembering about the names being made now.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Launa has no established etymology. It may be a variant of Lona or Luana, or an independent formation. Luana itself was coined for a 1932 film and postdates this name's 1908 peak, so it cannot be the source. Launa belongs to a class of short American coinages of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries with no traceable derivation.
