Taniya
Feminine
Taniya is a Russian pet form that became an American full name, and then acquired an American ending on the way. Tanya is what Russians call a Tatiana; English-speaking countries adopted Tanya as a name in its own right in the 1960s, and by the 1990s American parents were rewriting its tail as -iya. Taniya's peak is 2006, at the top six hundred and sixty-five.

The story of Taniya
Saint Tatiana, a Roman martyr, gave the name its footing in the Eastern church, and it became a standard Russian name; Pushkin's Tatiana in Eugene Onegin made it a national one. Russian shortens it to Tanya in ordinary speech, and it was that spoken form, not the formal one, that Western Europe and America adopted after the Second World War. American Tanyas of the 1960s and 1970s usually had no Russian connection at all. The -iya respelling belongs to a later and different current: from the 1990s American parents extended two-syllable girls' names with a third syllable ending in -iya or -iyah, which is how Taniya, Aaliyah, Amiya and Zaniya all arrived.
Meaningnot established
from a Roman family name of unknown meaning
Tatiana is the feminine of the Roman family name Tatianus, itself derived from Tatius. Titus Tatius was a legendary Sabine king of Rome, and the name is probably Sabine rather than Latin, which puts it beyond recovery — Sabine is very poorly attested. So the name has a completely documented history and no meaning at all, which is a more common combination among Roman names than most people expect. Tanya and Taniya inherit that position.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Taniya went to 21 girls in 2025, but Tania, Taniyah and Tanya are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 200, which makes it the 760th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,962 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 8,036 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 76,537 for Taniya itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Sherie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Taniya's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sherie climbed just as high around 1956, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Sherie's path sketches the road Taniya is walking now.
Taniya sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Tanya is available as a shorter, more familiar equivalent.
- The spelling is phonetic in English and easy to write.
- It has a genuine and unusually well-documented Roman and Russian ancestry.
- Taniya, Taniyah and Tanya all circulate and are constantly interchanged.
- Two stress patterns are current, and the spelling does not settle which.
- The underlying Roman name has no recoverable meaning, so there is no short answer.
