Suzy
Feminine · “lily”
Suzy is Susan wearing the informal ending that mid-century America put on almost everything: Judy, Cindy, Debby, Kathy, Suzy. It reached the top seven hundred in the early 1960s. Underneath is one of the oldest continuously used women's names in the world, an Egyptian and Hebrew word for a flower that was already ancient when the Book of Susanna was written.

The story of Suzy
Susanna appears in the Book of Daniel in the Greek Bible — the story of Susanna and the elders — and again in Luke as one of the women who supported Jesus. That gave the name a place in Christian Europe from an early date. English used Susan, Susanna and Suzanne interchangeably for centuries. The pet forms proliferated in the twentieth century, and Suzy specifically belongs to the 1940s through 1960s, when informal -y endings were fashionable enough to stand alone on birth certificates. The spelling divides with Susie, which has always been the larger of the two.
Meaning
lily, or lotus
Hebrew shoshannah is the name of a flower — a lily in most English translations, though the underlying word is probably older than Hebrew and may originally have meant the lotus, borrowed from Egyptian. It gives the modern Hebrew Shoshana and, through Greek Sousanna, the Latin Susanna and every European Susan. The derivation is settled and the only argument is botanical: which flower the ancient word actually named.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Jonnie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Suzy's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jonnie climbed just as high around 1944, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jonnie's path sketches the road Suzy is walking now.
Suzy sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is warm, short and requires no explanation anywhere in the English-speaking world.
- The underlying meaning is a single concrete image and is genuinely ancient.
- Susan, Susanna and Suzanne are all available as longer, more formal alternatives.
- Suzy and Susie sound identical and hers will be spelled the other way constantly.
- The -y ending reads as a nickname on adult documents.
- Its popularity curve is tightly mid-century, so the name places a bearer's generation.
