Six spellings compete for this sound and Susy is the leanest: no z, no ie, no doubled letter, four characters and done. The flower underneath is not quite settled — shoshannah covers more than one plant, and translators have made it a lily, a lotus and a rose depending on where they thought the story was set.

Where it comes from

The story of Susy

Susanna produced an unusual number of short forms in English — Sue, Susie, Suzy, Susy, Suki and Sukey among them — and several became independent names. Sukey is the interesting one: it comes from Suke, an older short form, by the same medieval habit of adding a diminutive ending that gave Nelly and Molly. Susy is the plainest of the modern set and appears in American records from 1940, peaking in the early 1960s alongside Susan's own peak.

Meaningscholars disagree

lily, or lotus

The Hebrew shoshannah names a flower, and which one is genuinely argued. Lily is the traditional English rendering; the lotus has strong support, since the word appears to be borrowed from Egyptian, where the lotus mattered enormously; and a rose is offered in some older translations. The flower is certain and the species is not.

Susy sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1962, with 32 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Susy went to 6 girls in 2025, but Suzy is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 27, which makes it the 933rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 12,275 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 59,528 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 267,878 for Susy itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is the shortest spelling of a sound usually written with five or six letters.
  • Sue and Susanna are both available and belong to different registers.
  • It is warm and short without being childish.
What to consider
  • Susie and Suzy are both commoner and will be written instead.
  • As a given name it reads as a nickname, and a woman will be asked what it is short for.
  • It belongs to a mid-century generation and carries that flavor.
