Where it comes from

The story of Sophi

Justinian's church, completed in 537 and for a thousand years the largest interior space in the world, was dedicated to Hagia Sophia, the Holy Wisdom, which in the theology of the time meant Christ himself. It was a dedication to a divine attribute, in the same manner as the churches of the Holy Peace and the Holy Power in the same city. Later devotion, uncomfortable with a church named after a concept, produced a martyr called Sophia with three daughters conveniently named Faith, Hope and Charity, and the legend spread widely enough that Sophia entered the calendar as a personal saint. The name's real content is the Greek word, which is why philosophy means the love of it, and why Sophia has been used continuously in Greek, Russian and Western European naming for well over a thousand years.

Meaning

Greek sophia, wisdom

From Greek sophia, wisdom, the same word behind philosophy, the love of wisdom. Sophi is a clipped American spelling of Sophie or Sophia. The great church in Constantinople, dedicated in 537, was named for the Holy Wisdom, a title of Christ, not for a martyr; a later legend supplied a St Sophia with three daughters named Faith, Hope and Charity. The peak of this spelling is 2012.

Sophi sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2012, with 40 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Sophi went to 9 girls in 2025, but Sofi, Sofy and Sophy are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 43, which makes it the 917th most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,190 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 37,378 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 178,585 for Sophi itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
