Sophy
Feminine · “wisdom”
For two hundred years the English called the Shah of Persia the Sophy. It was a garbling of Safavid, the name of the ruling dynasty, and it turns up in Shakespeare and in every English account of the East until the eighteenth century. The name Sophy has nothing to do with it — it is Sophia with an English ending — but the collision is real and rather good.

The story of Sophy
Sophia entered English use through the Byzantine and then the German royal houses; the Electress Sophia of Hanover is the reason the British monarchy is descended from whom it is. English wrote the short form Sophy from the seventeenth century onward, and it was the standard spelling until well into the nineteenth — Jane Austen and Dickens both use it. It gave way to Sophie in the twentieth. American records show Sophy from 1912 in small numbers, which puts it at the tail end of a long English habit rather than at the start of a new one.
Meaning
wisdom
From the Greek sophia, wisdom — the same word behind philosophy, which is the love of it. The name was given in the Greek world as an abstract virtue and became a Christian one through personifications of Holy Wisdom, to whom the great church in Constantinople was dedicated.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Sophy went to 6 girls in 2025, but Sofi, Sophi and Sofy are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 43, which makes it the 917th most-given girls’ name of the year — 12,291 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 37,378 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 267,878 for Sophy itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off
- It is the historical English spelling rather than a modern respelling.
- Sophia sits behind it as a formal option and is currently everywhere.
- The meaning is one word long and entirely positive.
- Five letters, two syllables, and readable on sight.
- Sophie is the standard modern spelling and will be written instead constantly.
- The name family is currently very heavily used, so a girl will meet many near-namesakes.
- The y ending reads as archaic to some people, which is either the point or the problem.
