The story of Socorro
When Juan de Oñate's colonists struggled up the Rio Grande, hungry and exhausted, the people of a Piro pueblo gave them corn, and the Spaniards called the place Socorro, help; the town of Socorro, New Mexico, keeps the name. The devotion behind the girl's name centers on an old Byzantine-style icon in Rome showing the Virgin holding the Christ child, who has turned in fright at angels bearing the instruments of the Passion so quickly that one sandal hangs loose. The name is recorded for a very few boys, but it is a woman's name almost everywhere.

The Rosia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Socorro's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rosia climbed just as high around 1910, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rosia's path sketches the road Socorro is walking now.
Socorro sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
