Where it comes from

The story of Socorro

When Juan de Oñate's colonists struggled up the Rio Grande, hungry and exhausted, the people of a Piro pueblo gave them corn, and the Spaniards called the place Socorro, help; the town of Socorro, New Mexico, keeps the name. The devotion behind the girl's name centers on an old Byzantine-style icon in Rome showing the Virgin holding the Christ child, who has turned in fright at angels bearing the instruments of the Passion so quickly that one sandal hangs loose. The name is recorded for a very few boys, but it is a woman's name almost everywhere.

Fashion outlook

Socorro sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Its meaning, help, is clear and kind.
  • Coco and Soco are warm short forms.
  • It carries a deep devotional tradition.
What to consider
  • English speakers will not roll the r and may stress the first syllable.
  • Its strong religious meaning may matter, one way or the other, to the family.
