The story of Skyleigh
New Netherland lasted forty years and its linguistic residue is enormous. The Dutch controlled the Hudson valley from 1614 to 1664 and left behind a layer of place names that most New Yorkers use daily without knowing: Brooklyn is Breukelen, a town in Utrecht; Harlem is Haarlem; Flushing is Vlissingen; the Bronx is named for Jonas Bronck; Coney Island is Konijn Eiland, rabbit island; the Bowery is bouwerij, a farm. English took cookie, coleslaw, waffle, boss, stoop and Santa Claus from the same source. The Dutch family names of the colony became American aristocratic ones, and several became given names: Schuyler, Van Buren, Roosevelt. Skyler is the phonetic respelling of one of them, and once respelled it looks like it contains the word sky, which is why the name is now heard as a weather word.
Meaningscholars disagree
Dutch schuyler, a scholar
Skyler and Schuyler descend from the Dutch surname Schuyler, from schuilen, to hide or take shelter, or from a word for a scholar; the derivation is argued. The Schuyler family were prominent in colonial New York. Skyleigh joins the respelled stem to the -leigh ending and the English word sky, which is not the source, has been read into it. It peaks in 2012.
