The story of Sina
The -ina and -sina endings were everywhere in nineteenth-century European and American naming: Rosina, Thomasina, Wilhelmina, Josephina, Alfonsina, Christina. Clipping from the front leaves Rose, Thomas and Wilhelm, which are the ancestors' names; clipping from the back leaves Ina, Mina and Sina, which are not, and that is what made them feel new. Whole American name families were built this way, and Ina, Mina, Tina and Lena all became independent names by the same route. Sina's best year on file is 1884, at the very start of American records, and it faded with the rest of that group after the First World War.

Not established
The American Sina of the 1880s is almost certainly a back-clipping of the -sina and -ina names rather than a name in its own right, and it therefore has no meaning of its own. Separate and unrelated names share the spelling: Sina is a central figure in Samoan and Polynesian legend, Sina is the Persian form in the name of the physician Ibn Sina, and Sina is a modern Iranian and German given name. None of these is the source of the nineteenth-century American row.

The trade-off
- Four letters, two syllables, and no silent letters anywhere.
- Exists independently in German, Italian, Persian and Samoan naming, so it travels.
- Very rare in the United States while being completely easy to say.
- English speakers will try a long i on first reading.
- Nina, Tina and Gina are all one letter away and will be substituted.
- The American form is a fragment of longer names rather than a name with a history of its own.
