Sina belongs to two traditions that could hardly be further apart. In Samoa and across Polynesia, Sina is a central figure of legend and an ordinary woman's name. In Persian, Sina is the name by which Avicenna — Ibn Sina, the greatest physician and philosopher of the medieval Islamic world — is known. The American record carries both. Its boys' peak is 1982.

Our story of Sina
Ibn Sina is worth knowing about for anyone carrying the name. Born near Bukhara around 980, he wrote the Canon of Medicine, which was the standard medical textbook in Europe as well as the Islamic world for six centuries — still being taught at Montpellier and Louvain in the 1600s. He also wrote a philosophical encyclopedia that shaped Aquinas and the whole of scholastic thought, and he did most of it while working as a court physician and administrator, frequently on the run from political trouble. Europeans called him Avicenna, a Latinization of Ibn Sina by way of Hebrew. In Iran he is simply Sina, and the name is given to children in his memory. That is a considerable thing for a four-letter name to carry.

Not established
Two unrelated sources. Samoan Sina is a legendary woman whose story explains the origin of the coconut; the name is cognate with Hina across Polynesia and is generally connected to a word for pale or bright. Persian Sina is the family name of Ibn Sina, and its own etymology is not established; it is used as a men's given name in Iran. The two names share four letters and nothing else.

The Abdon test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Sina's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Abdon climbed just as high around 1915, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Abdon's path sketches the road Sina is walking now.
Sina sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
