Where it comes from

The story of Sidharth

The prince of the Shakya clan left his father's household at twenty-nine and became the Buddha; the name Siddhartha belongs to the years before that, and it is the name Hindu families as well as Buddhist ones give. It is used across northern and southern India, spelled Siddharth, Sidharth and Siddhartha depending on the region and the transliteration. It came to American records with Indian families over the last few decades.

Meaning

one who has accomplished his aim

Sidharth sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2003, with 43 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Sidharth went to 18 boys in 2025, but Siddharth is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 77, which makes it the 851st most-given boys’ name of the year — 4,357 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 22,183 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 94,893 for Sidharth itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Sid is a ready short form that works everywhere in the English-speaking world.
  • The meaning is a complete phrase and one that a family can mean sincerely.
  • It carries a figure known across the whole world.
What to consider
  • Siddharth, Sidharth and Siddhartha are all in use, so records within a family may differ.
  • English speakers say the th as in think, which is not the Indian sound.
  • It carries the Buddha, which is a very large association for a child.
