Where it comes from

The story of Siddharth

Siddhartha Gautama was born a prince, left the palace after seeing sickness, age and death, and became the Buddha — and his birth name already declared the aim accomplished, decades before he did it. Hermann Hesse borrowed the name for a novel. Siddharth is standard in India and is in current American use.

Meaning

one who has achieved his aim

From the Sanskrit siddha, 'accomplished' or 'perfected', and artha, 'aim' or 'purpose' — 'he whose aim is achieved'. It was the personal name of Gautama Buddha. The Sanskrit is documented and the compound transparent.

Siddharth sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2010, with 184 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Siddharth went to 59 boys in 2025, but Sidharth is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 77, which makes it the 851st most-given boys’ name of the year — 1,481 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 22,183 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 28,950 for Siddharth itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • That the Buddha's birth name already declared the aim achieved is a first-rate fact.
  • Sid is available as a short form with a real record.
  • The accomplished-aim meaning is transparent and strong.
What to consider
  • The aspirated consonants are not distinguished in English.
  • It carries the Buddha's name, which some families will weigh.
  • Siddharth and Siddhartha are both in circulation.
