Sherlin
Feminine
Sherlin belongs to a family of names with an unusually blank starting point. Cheryl appeared in English in the twentieth century without a clear parent — nobody has traced it convincingly to anything older — and it produced Sheryl, Sherilyn, Sherlyn and Sherlin. This spelling is used most in Spanish-speaking families, where the -lin ending is written without a y.

The story of Sherlin
Names sometimes appear without ancestors, and the twentieth century produced several: Cheryl, Sheryl, Darlene and Marlene all became widely used within a generation of first being recorded. Once Cheryl was established, the -lyn ending attached to it as it attached to everything else, and Sherilyn and Sherlyn followed. The spread into Spanish-speaking use came later and brought its own spelling habits with it — Spanish has little use for a y in that position, so Sherlin, Sherlyn and Cherlin all appear in Latin American records, where they are ordinary names rather than variants.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Cheryl is one of the few widely used English names whose origin is genuinely unrecovered. Proposals connect it to Cherie, to Charlotte, and to a blend of Cherry and Beryl, and none of them has evidence behind it — the name simply appears and spreads. Sherilyn adds the -lyn ending, which comes from Welsh llyn by way of the name Lynn but arrives as a suffix. So the name is a suffix attached to an unexplained name, and no meaning follows.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Sherrilyn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Sherlin's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sherrilyn climbed just as high around 1947, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Sherrilyn's path sketches the road Sherlin is walking now.
Sherlin sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Two syllables, phonetic in both English and Spanish, and said the same way in each.
- Sher and Lin are both usable short forms and they sound quite different.
- It is a standard Latin American spelling rather than a respelling, which matters in a bilingual household.
- Sherlyn is the more common spelling of the same name, and the y will be substituted.
- There is no documented origin anywhere in the family, so no meaning is available to hand over.
- It sits very close to Sherlock and to Shirley in English ears, and both get mentioned.
