Sherrilyn joins a front that looks like a shorter name to an ending that was attached to almost anything in the decades it appeared, and the record names neither. The sound at the front does open an English word family that arrived from Arabic three separate times.

Where it comes from

Our story of Sherrilyn

One Arabic verb meaning to drink has given English three words by three different routes. Sharab, a drink, became Turkish and then Italian sorbetto and reached English as sorbet, meaning an iced dessert. The same word came directly from Arabic through travelers' accounts as sherbet, which in its original sense was a cool sweetened fruit drink and in modern British usage is a fizzing powder. And sharab also went into medieval Latin as siropus, a medicinal sweet liquid, and gave English syrup. Three words with three different meanings, three different spellings and one parent, and English speakers use all of them without any sense that they are related. The Arabic root also gives the word for a toast, and the drink the word originally described is still made across the Middle East.

The front resembles several names and is not clearly any of them; the ending is a free American element with no content. Nothing records what a family meant by the combination, and the name predates the more famous name it looks like a variant of.

Three syllables with the stress at the front. The doubled r keeps the first vowel short, which is the only thing that would otherwise be open to a reader.

Fashion outlook

Sherrilyn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Three short forms come out of it and none sounds like the others.
  • Front stress on three syllables is a comfortable English rhythm.
  • The spelling is phonetic and survives being heard once.
What to consider
  • Sherilyn, Cherilyn and Sharilyn are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The ending places the name in a particular stretch of American fashion.
  • Neither element carries a meaning, so the origin question has a short answer.
