Where it comes from

Our story of Sharod

A suffix becomes available when enough names carry it for a listener to hear it as a unit. The -lyn ending qualified because hundreds of thousands of American women were called Lynn or had it as a middle name. The -aden ending qualified because Aiden and Braden reached the top of the list. An ending that appears on three names, all of them foreign and none of them common, never gets there, which is why -od has essentially no productive life in English naming: Nimrod is a Hebrew name attached to a hunter and now used as an insult, Herod is unusable, and Hesiod is a Greek poet nobody names a child after. So a coinage using it is doing something the system does not otherwise do, and the result is genuinely distinctive at the cost of sounding like nothing else.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Sharod has no inherited etymology. It joins a Sha- opening to a -rod ending. The opening belongs to the small set of American prefixes drawn from Arabic-derived names such as Shakir and Sharif; the ending has no source and no productive history in English naming. The peak is 1988.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Rod is available as a short form and is a name in its own right.
  • The stressed ending gives it a firm final beat.
  • It is genuinely distinctive.
What to consider
  • Sherrod is an established surname with a similar sound.
  • The ending is not a pattern in English naming.
  • It has no meaning in any language.
