Shamus
Masculine · “Hebrew Yaakov”
A shamus, in American slang, is a private detective. Where the slang word came from is genuinely disputed: one camp derives it from the Irish name Seamus, on the grounds that so many city policemen were Irish, the other from Yiddish shammes, the caretaker of a synagogue. Both communities were in the same neighborhoods, and the word may owe something to each.

The story of Shamus
Jacob became James through a sound change in late Latin: Iacobus developed a variant Iacomus, with m for b, and it is that variant that gave French Jacques and Gemmes, Spanish Jaime, Italian Giacomo and English James. The unaltered form gave Jacob in English and Jacques again in French, which is why French has two descendants of one name and English has two as well. Irish took James from Norman French and adapted it to Irish phonology as Seamus, with the initial s standing for the English j sound, which Irish spells differently. When Irish speakers in America wrote their names in English orthography, Seamus became Shamus, since sh is how English writes that sound. The name peaks in 1975, well after the slang term was established, so the two have coexisted for the whole of its American life.
Meaning
Hebrew Yaakov, through Latin Iacomus
Shamus is an English respelling of the Irish Seamus, which is the Irish form of James. James descends from Latin Iacomus, a late variant of Iacobus, which is Hebrew Yaakov, Jacob. So Shamus, Seamus, James, Jaime, Diego and Jacob are all one name. Shamus is separately an American slang word for a detective, of disputed origin, and that association is unavoidable in the United States.

The Lemar test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Shamus's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lemar climbed just as high around 1900, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lemar's path sketches the road Shamus is walking now.
Shamus sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
