Shamaya
Feminine · “the Lord has heard”
Shamaya has a real biblical name standing one step away from it. Shemaiah appears repeatedly in the Hebrew Bible — a prophet, several priests, a gatekeeper — and it says the Lord has heard, which is the same idea behind Simon and Samuel. Whether an American Shamaya descends from it or was built from a prefix and an ending is genuinely open.

The story of Shamaya
The verb shama runs through a whole family of Hebrew names — Simon, Samuel, Shimei, Shemaiah — all of them about hearing, and specifically about God hearing rather than a person listening. Names of that shape were common because they marked a birth as an answer to something. Quite separately, American naming produced Shamaya, Shamiya and Shamya from its own inventory over the last several decades. The two traditions have met at one spelling without either knowing about the other, which happens more often than anyone notices.

the Lord has heard
Shemaiah joins the Hebrew verb shama, to hear, with a short form of the divine name — so the Lord has heard, a statement about an answered prayer rather than a description of a person. That is settled for Shemaiah. The other road runs through American combination naming: Sha- plus -maya, both standard components, arriving at nearly the same letters by a route with no Hebrew in it. The record does not distinguish the two, so the biblical reading is available and not guaranteed.

The Kathreen test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Shamaya's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kathreen climbed just as high around 1912, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kathreen's path sketches the road Shamaya is walking now.
Shamaya sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Maya sits inside it as a short form that is completely at home in English.
- There is a genuine biblical name one step away if a family wants the documented version.
- Three open syllables that sit well against a short or blunt surname.
- The middle vowel can be read two ways and the spelling settles neither.
- Shamiya, Shameya and Shamaia are all in use, so the name gets dictated in full.
- The biblical connection is a resemblance rather than a documented line, and it should be offered that way.
