Shadi
Masculine · “Arabic shadi”
Shadi is given to both — 719 boys and 247 girls since 1880. See other names given to both
Arabic and Persian use the same alphabet and share a great deal of vocabulary, which means that in Roman letters two entirely different words can arrive looking identical. Shadi is Arabic for singer and Persian for happiness, and the spelling gives no way to tell which one a bearer has.

The story of Shadi
Transliteration collisions of this kind are a specific problem for names from the Islamic world, because Persian, Urdu, Kurdish and Ottoman Turkish all wrote with the Arabic script while keeping their own vocabularies. The script marks consonants fully and short vowels barely, so two words that a native reader distinguishes by context become one string in Roman letters. Shadi is a clean example. So are Rahim and Raheem, Nadia and Nadiya, Sara and Sarah, and dozens of others where a single American spelling covers several distinct originals. Any reference book that gives one meaning for such a name has silently chosen a language. The honest answer is to name both sources and say that the record cannot decide, because on paper, in English, there is genuinely nothing left to decide it with.

Arabic shadi, singer
Two unrelated sources produce the same Roman spelling. Arabic shadi is from the root sh-d-w, to sing or chant, giving singer or chanter. Persian shadi is from shad, happy, giving happiness or joy, and is used as a name for both sexes in Iran. The words are written differently in Arabic script and pronounced with different vowels, and the distinction is lost entirely in transliteration. The American peak is 1983.

The Dany test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Shadi's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Dany climbed just as high around 1954, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Dany's path sketches the road Shadi is walking now.
Shadi sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
