Severiano
Masculine · “Latin Severianus”
The Roman ending -ianus is a record of adoption. When a Roman was adopted into another family he took the new family's name and turned his old one into an adjective: Octavius adopted by Caesar became Octavianus, the one from the Octavii. Every name ending -ian in a European language descends from that piece of legal machinery.

The story of Severiano
Roman adoption was a legal transfer of a person between families and it was used constantly by the elite to manage inheritance, since a man with no sons could acquire one in adulthood. The adopted man took his new father's three names and added a fourth, formed from his birth family's name with -ianus attached. Gaius Octavius, adopted in Caesar's will, became Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus, which is why historians call him Octavian for the years before he was Augustus. Scipio Aemilianus was born an Aemilius and adopted by the Scipios. The suffix outlived the institution and became simply a way to make a name from a name, which is how Severianus, Justinian, Hadrian, Julian and Adrian all exist. English inherited it as -ian and now uses it to make adjectives from anything: Shakespearian, Victorian, Freudian.
Meaning
Latin Severianus, of the Severus family
From the Roman cognomen Severus, stern or serious, with the suffix -ianus, meaning belonging to or descended from. So Severianus is one of the Severi. The suffix was originally a marker of adoption and became a general way of forming a name from another name. Severiano is the Spanish and Italian form; the feminine Severiana also occurs. It peaks in the American data in 1946.

The Trino test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Severiano's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Trino climbed just as high around 1922, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Trino's path sketches the road Severiano is walking now.
