Senora
Feminine · “lady”
Senora is a Spanish courtesy title used as a name. Senora is what you call a married woman in Spanish — madam, lady, ma'am — and it descends from the Latin for elder. Nineteenth-century America took a surprising number of Spanish words for daughters, and this is one of the plainer ones.

The story of Senora
Through the eighteen-hundreds American families took names from anywhere that sounded well — states, rivers, plants, Latin words, and Spanish ones. Senora, Ramona, Juanita, Manuela and Dolores all appear in records from families with no Spanish connection at all, alongside families with every connection. The Spanish word for a lady was in wide English circulation from writing about the Southwest and from the theater, and it entered the naming pool the way Ramona did. What distinguishes it is that it was never a name in Spanish: no Spanish-speaking family would use a title as a given name, which makes this a specifically American formation.
Meaning
lady; madam
Spanish senora comes from Latin senior, the comparative of senex, old — so literally the elder, which is where English senior and sir also come from. It became a title of respect and then the ordinary word for a married woman. As a name it is also connected to Nuestra Senora, Our Lady, which is how Spanish refers to the Virgin, and that devotional sense is likely to be what a family had in mind. The word itself is not disputed.

Pronouncing Senora
seh-NOR-uh
seh-NOR-uh, three syllables, stress in the middle. Spanish writes the word with a tilde on the n, which makes it a distinct consonant said senh-YOR-ah; the American spelling drops the tilde and the sound with it, giving a plain n.

The trade-off
- Nora sits inside it as a short form that needs no explanation anywhere.
- The word is universally recognized, so nobody hesitates over the sound.
- It has a documented Latin history and a devotional sense behind it.
- It is a form of address rather than a name in Spanish, and Spanish speakers will hear it that way — being called ma'am by strangers is a particular kind of joke to live with.
- Dropping the tilde changes a genuine Spanish consonant into a plain one, which reads as an error to anyone who knows the language.
- The name belongs to a much earlier American century and has not returned.
