Where it comes from

The story of Seema

Sanskrit assigns grammatical gender to nouns, and the great majority of abstract nouns formed with the common suffixes are feminine: shanti peace, asha hope, maya illusion, sima boundary, vidya knowledge, kirti fame. That is a fact about the grammar rather than about the culture, but it shaped the name stock decisively, because a name has to agree with the person carrying it. Girls could be named for qualities and states because those words were already feminine; boys were named instead for gods, epithets and heroes, which are masculine. The pattern is visible across Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi and Bengali naming to this day, and it is one of the clearest cases anywhere of a language's grammar deciding what a whole population can be called.

Meaning

Sanskrit sima, boundary or limit

From Sanskrit sima, a boundary, border or limit, used both of land and of the limits of anything. A separate Hebrew and Yiddish name Sima, from a word for treasure, is unrelated and reached America by another route. The peak is 1981.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
