The story of Schuyler
The Dutch held the Hudson valley from 1624 until the English took it in 1664, and forty years was enough. The place names stayed: Breukelen became Brooklyn, Haarlem became Harlem, Jonkheer's land became Yonkers, Bronck's farm gave the Bronx, Konijneneiland gave Coney Island. So did a set of everyday words that English acquired nowhere else: cookie from koekje, stoop from stoep, boss from baas, coleslaw from koolsla, waffle, dope, snoop, spook and Santa Claus from Sinterklaas. And so did the families: the Schuylers, Roosevelts, Vanderbilts and Van Burens were all Hudson valley Dutch, and Philip Schuyler, a general in the Revolution, put the surname into American use as a given name. Skyler and Skylar are its modern respellings.
