The story of Schuyler
The Schuylers were one of the great Dutch families of the Hudson valley, and Philip Schuyler was a general in the Continental Army, a senator, and the father of Elizabeth, who married Alexander Hamilton. In 1777 he commanded the northern department as a British army came south from Canada; he ordered the roads felled and the country stripped, which slowed the advance to a crawl, and Congress then replaced him with Horatio Gates, who accepted the surrender at Saratoga and took the credit. Schuyler asked for a court-martial to clear himself, got one, and was acquitted. His surname entered American use as a given name in the nineteenth century, and it is now more often written Skyler or Skylar, which detaches it from the family and from the Dutch.

Dutch schuilen, to shelter or hide
Schuyler is a Hudson valley Dutch surname, generally connected to schuilen, to take shelter, and often glossed as scholar, which is disputed. The phonetic respelling Skyler has nothing to do with the sky. The male peak of this spelling is 1982.
