Saron
Feminine · “the plain”
Saron is given to both — 776 girls and 156 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Saron is Sharon without the h, and in a great many families it is not a respelling at all — it is how the name is written in Ethiopia and Eritrea, where Saron is an ordinary given name. The place behind it is real: the Sharon is the coastal plain that runs north from Tel Aviv, fertile and famous for it.

The story of Saron
Sharon became an American girls' name in the twentieth century, taken from the biblical phrase rather than the geography. Ethiopian and Eritrean naming arrived at the same word by a different road entirely: the Ethiopian church has used biblical names in Ge'ez forms for many centuries, and Ge'ez and Amharic write the sound without the h that English uses. So Saron in an American record may be a shortened Sharon or may be a name that was never spelled any other way. Both are common, and the regions where the name appears most suggest that both are present.
Meaning
the plain
Hebrew sharon means a plain or a flat stretch of country, and with the definite article it names one specific plain — the coastal strip between the hills and the Mediterranean. The Song of Songs calls someone a rose of Sharon, which is where the phrase and most of the name's romance come from, though what flower was meant is not known and probably was not a rose. The meaning is settled; only the botany is open.

The Tamaria test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Saron's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Tamaria climbed just as high around 1977, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Tamaria's path sketches the road Saron is walking now.
Saron sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It names a real and specific place with a documented history.
- It is a standard spelling in Ethiopian and Eritrean use rather than a respelling of anything.
- It goes to girls and boys in close to equal numbers, which few names actually do.
- Sharon is the spelling most Americans know, and this one will be corrected toward it constantly.
- The stress falls differently in English and in Amharic, so a bilingual child will answer to two versions.
- Because the split between girls and boys is nearly even, forms will guess wrong in both directions.
