Tamaria
Feminine · “date palm”
Tamar is a date palm. The Hebrew word names the tree and the fruit, and it belonged to three separate women in the Hebrew Bible, two of whom have difficult stories. Tamaria overlaps it with Maria — the letters shared in the middle do the joining — which is the most economical way American naming has of building a new name out of two old ones.

The story of Tamaria
Tamara is the Russian and Georgian form of Tamar and became widely used in twentieth-century America, quite separately from the Hebrew original. Maria has been in continuous use everywhere. Blending two names by overlapping their shared letters is a standing American habit, and it works best when the seam is invisible — which it is here. Tamaria appears in the record from 1959 and peaked in the late 1970s, which places it in the decades when this kind of construction was at its most productive.
Meaningscholars disagree
date palm, with Mary
Tamar is the Hebrew for a date palm, an ordinary and unambiguous word. Maria comes from Miryam, whose meaning has never been established. So the compound joins something entirely clear to something entirely unknown — assuming that is what it is, since Tamaria may equally be Tamara with an ending added.

The Charlett test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tamaria's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Charlett climbed just as high around 1950, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Charlett's path sketches the road Tamaria is walking now.
Tamaria sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It shortens three ways and the three short forms are entirely unalike.
- The Hebrew word behind the front is concrete and easy to picture.
- Four open syllables that sit well after almost any surname.
- Tamara, Tamaria and Tamera all sit close by and will be written instead.
- The stress placement is unsettled, so the name arrives two ways.
- The two halves have nothing to do with each other, so there is no single meaning.
