The story of Sanjay
The Mahabharata gives Sanjaya an unusual role: he sees the whole war from a distance and reports it, so that the entire poem reaches its audience through his voice. The name has been in use in India for as long as the epic has been recited, and it became very widely given in the twentieth century across Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Nepali and Kannada-speaking families. It came into American and British records with South Asian migration from the nineteen-sixties onward, and its spelling has stayed stable because it transliterates cleanly.

The Carmon test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Sanjay's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Carmon climbed just as high around 1915, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Carmon's path sketches the road Sanjay is walking now.
Sanjay sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is settled, positive and easy to state in two words.
- Jay works as a short form and needs no explaining anywhere in the English-speaking world.
- It is recognized across the whole of India and the South Asian diaspora.
- English speakers often say SAN with the vowel of sand, which is not the Indian sound.
- Sanjay and Sanjeev are close enough to be confused by people who half-heard it.
- It is very common in India, so a family there may find it less distinctive than it feels elsewhere.
