The story of Sanchez
Sanctus is the past participle of sancire, to make sacred or ratify, from the same root as sacer, sacred. It gave the Spanish personal name Sancho, common among the medieval kings of the peninsula, and through it the surname Sanchez, one of the most numerous in the Spanish-speaking world. Cervantes gave the name to Quixote's squire, a farmer motivated by food, sleep, money and the promise of an island to govern, and the contrast with the meaning is part of the joke; Quixote's own name is a piece of armor for the thigh. The pairing of an idealist with a materialist has been imitated so often that the adjectives quixotic and, less commonly, sanchopanzine both exist. The root also gives sanction, sanctuary, saint, sanctimonious and, through French, sacrament.
