Sanam
Feminine · “Persian sanam”
Persian poets called the beloved an idol. Sanam means an idol, a graven image, the thing monotheism forbids, and the poets used it for the person they loved, deliberately. The blasphemy was the point, and after a few centuries the word simply meant sweetheart and the shock had worn off entirely.

The story of Sanam
The device belongs to a whole vocabulary of deliberate transgression in Persian poetry. The beloved is an idol, worshipping them is heresy, the tavern is holier than the mosque, and the wine-seller's boy is the true guide. Hafiz, Rumi and their successors used all of it, and the reading has been argued over ever since: mystical, literal, or both at once, depending on the commentator. What is not in doubt is that the words were chosen for their charge. Calling the beloved sanam in a culture where idols are the paradigm case of forbidden worship is a statement, and doing it in a ghazal read aloud in company is a public one. Over time the charge dissipated and the word became ordinary. That is the usual fate of a poetic transgression: it succeeds, it is imitated, and it becomes a convention that nobody notices.
